Titanium alloy has the advantages of low density, high specific strength, good corrosion resistance and good process performance, which makes it an ideal structural material for aerospace engineering. Titanium and its alloys are replacing traditional aluminum alloys in many aerospace applications. Today, the aerospace industry consumes about 42 percent of global titanium production, and demand is expected to continue growing at double-digit rates through 2010. A new generation of aircraft needs to take full advantage of the capabilities offered by titanium alloys, which are driving demand in both commercial and military markets. New aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A380, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (also known as the Lightning II) are made of a lot of titanium. Titanium alloy has high strength, high fracture toughness and good corrosion resistance and weldability. As composite structures become increasingly used in aircraft fuselages, the proportion of titanium-based materials will also increase, as the combination of titanium and composite materials is far superior to aluminum alloy. For example, compared with aluminum alloy, titanium alloy can increase the life of fuselage structure by 60%.


Titanium alloys are generally considered difficult-to-work materials because they are more difficult to process than ordinary alloy steel. The metal removal rate of a typical titanium alloy is only about 25% of that of most ordinary or stainless steels, so it takes about four times as long to process a titanium workpiece as it does steel. In order to meet the growing demand for titanium alloy processing in the aerospace industry, manufacturers need to increase production capacity and therefore better understand the effectiveness of titanium alloy processing strategies. A typical titanium alloy workpiece is processed from forging until 80% of the material has been removed to obtain the final shape of the workpiece.


With the rapid growth of aviation parts market, manufacturers have felt inadequate, coupled with the low efficiency of titanium alloy workpiece processing and increased processing demand, resulting in titanium alloy processing capacity is obviously under strain. Some leading aerospace companies are even openly questioning whether existing machining capacity can handle all the new titanium alloy workpieces. Since these workpieces are usually made of new alloys, changes in machining methods and tool materials are required. The titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V has three different structural forms: A titanium alloy, A-B titanium alloy and B titanium alloy. Commercial pure titanium and A titanium alloys cannot be heat treated, but generally have good weldability; A-b titanium alloy can be heat treated, most also have weldability; B and quasi b titanium alloys are fully heat treatable and generally weldable.


Titanium alloy machining plays a very important role in the machinery manufacturing industry. The cutting of titanium alloy is always the difficulty of the current machining technology. In order to meet the increasing demand of aerospace titanium alloy workpiece, China's titanium alloy cutting must have great progress. On the basis of domestic materials, machine tools and management conditions, it is an important factor to promote the development of domestic titanium alloy industry and aerospace industry to further strengthen the optimization of processing route and processing parameters, improve processing efficiency and product quality.
